The Yukon Mustangs flexed their offensive muscles last weekend with a 6-0 series sweep over their Juneau hockey rivals.
The event marked the Whitehorse rep hockey program’s first home tournament of the season.
“We’re happy with the weekend,” said U16 Minor Midget Mustangs coach Martin Lawrie. “We had a feeling we’d be stronger than the (junior varsity) team. ... And the Juneau coaching staff was really happy about getting the games they got in, as well.”
The U16 Mustangs welcomed the Juneau Douglas High School Crimson Bears junior varsity team from Alaska by hammering them 19-0 to open the series Friday night at Takhini Arena.
Underager Kyron Crosby and Hazelton, B.C., import Anthony Louie both recorded hat tricks, with Johnny Elias, Dylan Kindervater, Mack Benn-Wipp and Dion Fowler each netting a pair to lead the charge.
The U18 Midget Mustangs followed that up with a much closer 4-2 win over the senior varsity Crimson Bears, with the game-winning goal coming courtesy of Nick Dobush.
On Saturday morning, the U16 club took their second straight from their Juneau rivals, earning a second straight shutout with a 7-0 win.
Underage callup Wyatt Peterson led the offence with two goals while the host squad also killed off eight minor penalties playing some rare full-contact games.
The U18 Mustangs followed with an 8-1 victory, thanks to a hat trick from Caleb Marsh and two goals from each of Dobush and Ryan Troke.
Then, Mustangs brass committed a good neighbourly act, by rejigging the game schedule in Juneau’s favour for the final two contests.
On Saturday afternoon, the U15 Bantam Mustangs were called into duty to face the junior varsity Juneau squad, with the younger Yukon boys earning a hardfought 4-1 victory.
The U16 Mustangs then completed the series sweep with a 5-0 win over their U18 Alaskan rivals that night.
“We wanted to ensure Juneau had a good experience,” Lawrie explained of the switch.
“And you want the Whitehorse teams to benefit from it.”
Whitehorse Minor Hockey Association head coach Derek Klassen said it was nice to see the fluidity between the different levels of Mustangs programming.
“What we’re trying to do with the Mustangs program moving forward is have a little more continuity,” he said, noting the bantam callups to the U16 team.
“The kids we feel are working and competing the hardest, if those opportunities arrive, they’ll get the tap.
“At the end of the day, it’s all about the kids – giving them the opportunities and getting them better.”
The Mustangs’ next home action is scheduled for early next month, when 11 visiting teams will converge on the Yukon capital for the 2015 International Showdown Tournament.
Each of the U13, U15, U16 and U18 Mustangs teams will see action.
