Yukon's Hunt, Fraser will mix it up against N.W.T.
Bruce Hunt is certainly glad he moved to the Yukon last August. So, too, is Brian Wasnea.
Bruce Hunt is certainly glad he moved to the Yukon last August.
So, too, is Brian Wasnea.
While Hunt is the second on Wasnea's Brier-bound men's team, he also won the Yukon mixed championship on Sunday as the skip, on a team which included Wasnea.
It's safe to say their first year curling together has been a successful one.
'My team curled great (this weekend),' said a smiling Hunt, who also curled with his wife Donna and Brian's daughter Tracey Oles. 'We were a little flat that game (a loss to Chad Cowan in the last draw), but the other three games we curled really good.'
Hunt, who has skipped quite a bit in the N.W.T. in the past, said he enjoyed the change from second this weekend.
'I like them both. I just happened to catch Brian at a weak moment, when he agreed to throw second,' Hunt joked. 'It feels good to holler at my skip for a while.'
Steve Fraser will enter the territorial playdowns as Yukon's number two skip next month, after finishing the weekend with a 3-1 record. Hunt beat Fraser in the round robin, so there was no need for a tie-breaker.
'We played pretty solid,' said Fraser, after a tough game against Pat Paslawski. 'We struggled a little bit today but we perservered.'
Fraser said his team was sort of thrown together just a couple of weeks ago, but he s been impressed so far.
'The important thing is we didn't all have a bad game at once,' he said.
Both Cowan and Paslawski finished at 2-2 for the weekend while Robert Drapeau had a final record of 1-3.
This will be Fraser's first time at mixed territorials, though he has been curling for about 30 years. While he doesn't know what to expect from the N.W.T., he's already preparing to take on Hunt again.
'I know we're going to play these guys (Hunt) different than we did this weekend,' he said. 'These guys play a really boring game of take-outs and we're not going to get sucked into that again.'
Hunt said he's not sure who will be coming out of the N.W.T. yet either, although he does know a lot of them from his days next door.
'We hope to get a few more games in,' said Hunt about the team's plans for preparation. 'Brian and I are off to the Brier, so obviously we'll get a few games in.
'My wife is coming to the Brier, so Tracy will try (to get games in) but it's tough with a little baby.'
Hunt said it's also tough for he and Wasnea to concentrate on anything other than the Brier. Both men will have just four days between the men's championship (March 6-14) and the mixed playdowns, which start March 18.
'To be honest, the Brier is on the top of my mind right now,' Hunt said. 'It was good to get some games in this weekend. You get the pressure shots and you're sweeping hard.
'Any games at all that we can get in like this and curl is great.'
Hunt said the team is also considering entering the Rendevous Bonspiel in Whitehorse this coming weekend. So is Fraser.
'We're going to talk about it,' Fraser said. 'We've now played a grand total of four or five games together (so it's probably a good idea).'
Even with the lack of experience together, Fraser said his team is going for a number one finish at playdowns next month, which would mean a spot at the mixed nationals.
'That's the deal,' he smiled. 'Take no prisoners.
'(And also) to go out there and give them our best game. I don't want to go out there and stink up the joint.'
The Yukon/N.W.T. mixed championship will be held in Whitehorse March 18-21. The High Country Inn Rendevous Mixed Bonspiel will take place Feb. 28 and 29 at the Mount McIntyre Recreation Centre.
