Fast times and a large turnout highlighted the Yukon 10-kilometre Road Race Championships held on Tuesday.

Forty-seven runners and walkers participated in the championships, with most completing the 10 km and a few opting for the usual five-km route.

In the 10 km, nine runners beat the benchmark time of 40 minutes led by Rodney Hulstein, who just two weeks ago won the half marathon in the Yukon River Trail Marathon.

With a time of 35:05, Hulstein finished almost 90 seconds ahead of his next challenger, Brent Langbakk (36:34), a former member of Canada's national orienteering team. Third place in the Open Men's division went to newcomer Andrew Brown (38:39), who a few years ago was a member of the famed University of Guelph cross-country running team.

Logan Roots (37:54), who finished third overall, claimed the Juvenile Men category.

Keith Thaxter (39:02) dominated the "young” Masters Men (40-49) category.

The incredible 50-something Bill Parry (38:41) walked away with the crown in the "older” Masters Men (50-59) group.

Cyclist-turned-runner Bob Bowerman (47:08) beat all others in the oldest Master Men (60-69) category.

On the women's side of the 10 km, the Sullivan name was pre-eminent for the fourth week in a row.

Maura Sullivan (39:23), who two weeks ago finished fourth out of 136 runners in the half marathon portion of the Yukon River Trail Marathon, was both the fastest woman in the Open Women category (20-34) and the fastest woman on the day, finishing eight overall.

There were several other category winners, including Sue Bogle (44:11) in Masters Women 1 (35-44), Deb Kiemele (55:09) in Masters Women 2 (45-54) and Ginny Macdonald (57:49) in Masters Women 3 (55+).

The race walkers who did the 10-km distance set a brisk pace right from the start.

In the final 200 metres to the finish line Ruth Hall had a full head of steam, finishing first in a time of 1:10:26.

Hall was closely followed by Arlene Ogden (1:10:47), who also sprinted to the finish line, cheered on by several runners enjoying the post-race refreshments. Tanya Astika (1:11:00) took third place on the podium, finishing 13 seconds behind Ogden.

In the 5 km distance, the Burke family cleaned up in both the male and female divisions. Hockey mom Eileen Burke was the fastest of the five female runners finishing first in a time of 27:56. Her son, Ryan Burke, was the fastest of the 11 male runners finishing in 22:07.

The 10 km is a classic distance in road racing, but it comes with its own unique challenges. For instance, the pace isn't as high as a three or five km race, but it's much higher than a 10-miler, a half marathon and certainly a marathon.
