Yukoners compete at 2010 Canada 55+ Games in Ontario
You're never too old to compete.
You're never too old to compete.
Proof of this are the 117 Yukon athletes who have descended upon the 2010 Canada 55+ Games in Brockville, Ont., from Aug. 25-28.
Gary Hewitt has won the Yukon its first medal, a silver in darts on opening day.
The eldest competitor from the Yukon?
Ninty-two-year-old Muriel MacMorin of Whitehorse.
Earlier this week 1,540 total competitors, which includes 1,290 athletes and 238 guests, from across Canada landed in Brockville and the 1,000 Islands region in Eastern Ontario to take part in 21 competitive events.
The opening ceremonies featured hockey legend Wayne Gretzky's father Walter, who spoke after lighting the flame.
Active Living Day fell on Aug. 26, the second day of the event.
Yukon chef de mission George Arcand said the athletes feel it's just great to be there.
"Walter Gretzky said, during the opening ceremonies, that just being here means we're a step above the rest,” Arcand said.
The competitions themselves, which include singles and doubles sports like track and field, swimming, tennis, 8-ball, darts and bridge, and team sports like curling, hockey and slo-pitch, will be webcast.
BrockNews.ca (BNTV), Brockville's online news service, is presenting a delayed version of the competitions, including highlights, online at www.bntv.ca, beginning at noon the day after each set of events. For instance, competitions which took place on Aug. 25 will be presented at noon on Aug. 26.
Arcand said the athletes know when to take themselves seriously.
"It's both (competitive and fun),” he said. "I think everyone is extremely competitive when they're competing. But they know when to have fun.”
The Canada 55+ Games began in 1996 and is a nationwide program to sponsor wellness – spiritual, mental and physical well-being – among Canadians 55-years and older, and are held every two years.
The games combine competitive physical activities and mental challenges.
The 2010 Games comprise participants who have won competitions in their categories in their respective provinces and territories.
