Janelle Greer may be the youngest member of the team representing Canada at the World Junior Championships, but on Monday she was also the fastest.
Going head to head with the best juniors cross country skiers in the world at Praz de Lys, in the French Alps, Greer finished in 37th place in her pursuit race.
More importantly, she was the fastest member of the four woman Canadian contingent contesting the race. Greer finished the 10 km course, which consisted of 5 km of classic skiing followed by 5 km of skating, in 35:12.
"Janelle showed a lot of grit and determination, and for her first world's at 16 years old, this is a great performance," said Erik de Nys, coach of the Canadian development team.
Norway's Ingvild Flugstad Oestberg won the women's event, which was contested by more than 60 skiers.
It was also a good day for Janelle's brother David.
Skiing in the men's 20 km pursuit, David finished 25th overall in a time of 56:21, just four minutes off the pace set by winner Petr Sedov of Russia.
Top Canadian for the day was Graeme Killick of Fort McMurray, Alta. who crossed the line in 15th place.
