Yukoner helps B.C. school to second overall finish at provincial running championships

Whitehorse's Kieran Halliday is evolving into a well-rounded athlete.
At just 15, Halliday has already represented the Yukon in tennis at the 2009 Canada Summer Games and national championships for soccer, among many others.
Last weekend he represented the Vancouver-based St. George's School at the B.C. High School Running Championships in Kelowna.
Finishing 57th out of roughly 300 runners, Halliday helped his school to a second-place finish overall.
Seven runners competed from St. George's, but it was only the top five runners from each team that added to the school's total points tally.
Halliday qualified for the provincials with a fifth-place finish on his team at zones earlier this fall.
But he improved on those results last weekend.
"In the actual race, I beat our school's third and fourth guys, so I actually came in third, which I thought was really good. I was proud of myself. It was a really hard race,” Halliday said of the seven-kilometre distance.
He qualified for provincials after a series of strong races over the fall term.
Following the third race in that series, Halliday was asked to try out for zones.
"At the start of the season, I had been getting similar positions, fifth or sixth, around there. At the start I was surprised that I was keeping up with the guys, but at provincials I was feeling better.”
Chris Johnson, St. George's School cross-country running coach, said Halliday was a solid addition to the team.
"We enjoy his positive attitude and team spirit and are impressed with his work ethic and competitiveness,” Johnson said. "The addition of Kieran certainly adds to our depth.”
St. George's won two previous consecutive provincial championships.
Now Halliday is also eyeing the varsity tennis team, which will compete in the spring.
"I've been talking to the coach this fall, and he thinks my chances of making it are really strong, so I'm just going to focus really hard and train a lot to make that team.”
