Yukoner George Arcand receives national award

Yukon's own George Arcand will receive the Community Service Prestige Award given the Canadian Sport Tourism Alliance for his dedicated work within the sport community.

Yukon's own George Arcand will receive the Community Service Prestige Award given the Canadian Sport Tourism Alliance for his dedicated work within the sport community.

The award will be handed out on April 16 in Gatineau, Quebec.

Passionate about softball and sport in the Yukon, Arcand has spent numerous years developing the sport of fastball as a coach and administrator.

Since it's inception in 1973, Arcand has been on the Board of the Yukon Sports Federation, now called Sport Yukon including the last eight years as president.

In November 2007, Arcand was inducted into the Canadian Softball Hall of Fame, following his 1996 induction into the Sport Yukon Hall of Fame for his contribution as a sport scene builder.

"George epitomizes true sportsmanship with his kind words and dedication to hard work," said Trevor Twardochleb, executive director of Sport Yukon in a press release. "He is an amazing man and a worthy candidate of the CSTA Community Service Award."

More hardware may make it's way to the Yukon. The 2008 Junior Men's Fastpitch Championships were also named one of three finalists for the 2009 Canadian Sport Tourism Alliance Prestige Awards in the Event of the Year Category ($250 k +).

The junior fastpitch championships had a budget of approximately $700,000.

The winner will be confirmed on April 16.

Arcand said it means a lot to be win the award.

"It's really nice to be recognized," he said. "The biggest thing for me was the world championship was also nominated and is one of the finalist for sport event of the year, so that's huge."

Arcand added that the fastpitch championship making the final three recognizes all the hard work that was put into making it possible.
