Yukon snowboarder Max Melvin-McNutt has a dream. A group of 114 supporters have helped give him a chance to make it happen.

Just nine days after the 20-year-old Yukoner made a public plea to raise $8,000 for travel expenses, he achieved the mark.

Melvin-McNutt’s fund-raiser at gofundme.com has collected $8,001.

The Whitehorse native now resides in Whistler, B.C., where he trains as a member of the national development team.

He has been floored by the support from back home.

“The fund-raiser has been an amazing experience,” he told the Star this week. “I have had so much support from people back home, and it is truly heartwarming. Everybody has been so generous and keen to do so.

“I am just so thankful, and now very excited about my upcoming World Cups.”

The young slopestyle snowboarder will attend two World Cup events in Quebec and Utah later this month, before heading to France for an international competition.

He will conclude his competitive season next month at the national championships in Whistler.

“My overall goal in my career is compete at the X Games and the U.S. Open in slopestyle,” he said. “And yes, the Olympics.

“Later in my career, I would like to work with a video production company and feature in snowboard movies.”
