Two young Yukoners were treated to top-class soccer at the USA Cup last week courtesy of Outside teams.

Whitehorse's Callum Wood-Ryan and Tyler Milton traveled to Blaine, Minn., from July 15-23 for the Schwan's USA Cup International Youth Soccer Tournament, which features 1,000 teams from 18 countries yearly.

Wood-Ryan was a guest player on the gold-medal winning Colegio Columbia in the U13 division of the silver flight.

This year marked the 13-year-old fullback's first trip to one of the largest youth tournaments worldwide.

He had more trouble adapting to the language than the skill level.

"It was kind of hard because they didn't speak much English. … The coach didn't speak much English,” he said, adding that two players spoke fluent English and that the team also picked up guest players from Minnesota.

Milton was picked up by the U11 Rio Selects 2 out of Brazil in the silver flight of the weeklong tournament. For the weekend portion, the 11-year-old suited up for the Crystal Lake Force from Illinois in the gold flight.

He won gold medals with both.

"It was very good; much different than here in Whitehorse. It was very competitive and it was really fun,” Milton said of both teams.

"There was a lot quicker movement of the ball, on the breaks, up the field.”

Like Wood-Ryan, last week was Milton's first experience at the USA Cup.

"It was very exciting. It was a different atmosphere than here in Whitehorse, but I enjoyed it a lot,” Milton said.

Not to mention his first experience playing with a team from Brazil.

"It was more passing in the midfield and then trying to play the through balls through to the strikers, who would try to put it away,” Milton said of the Brazilian style compared to that of the Yukon.

Of the Crystal Lake Force, he added: "They played the ball quick, nice crisp passes, and good hard shots.”

The Yukon was also represented at the USA Cup by the U16 boys and girls teams heading to the Western Canada Summer Games to be held in Kamloops, B.C., from Aug. 5-14.
