The Whitehorse Cross Country Ski Club is taking loppet season to a new distance with a ski marathon this weekend.
The first annual Yukon Ski Marathon is scheduled to take place March 5 with a 50-kilometre and a 20-kilometre race.
The long event will start at Mt. Lorne, while the 20K will start at Mt. Sima. Both races end at Mt. Mac.
According to the race website, the “Yukon Ski Marathon takes inspiration from the great long-distance races of the world,” it says. “The goal is for people to challenge themselves and experience the landscape around Whitehorse in a
new way.”
Both classic and skate techniques will be permitted with the trails being groomed from Mt. Lorne through to Mt. Mac.
The first 10K of trail will not be track-set, however as it is too narrow.
As of Monday afternoon, 143 skiers had signed up to race.
Online registration is open until midnight on March 2 with the cost of the 20K race set at $50 or $75 for the 50K.
There will be junior and open categories for the 20K, but only open categories for the 50K.
The 50K will start at 10 a.m., while the 20K will start at noon Sunday.
