The Yukon Selects entered the tournament with high hopes, but the result was the same as it's always been.
Another annual roadtrip to Prince George's BC Indoor Soccer League tournament, another early exit.
After a 1-1 pre-playoff record, the Selects lost on penalties in the quarter-final game to the eventual champion team, Wii Not Fit from Vancouver Island.
Penalty shots from Nick Locke and Dom Pehar were stopped, while Wii Not Fit put both of their shots past Yukon keeper Sean MacDonald.
Locke, the team's captain, scored in regulation, which ended 1-1.
The Selects have been attending the tournament regularly since 1999, but have never won it. They have played in the championship final twice.
"There's not a lot happening for indoor soccer in this area,” Selects coach Jake Hanson explained. "It's always been about going and trying to win this tournament.
The prospect of winning this tournament is kind of like the ultimate prize for the indoor version of this team.”
The Yukon club is an open-age team comprised of the top available soccer players in the territory. Fourteen players attended last weekend's tournament.
Hanson said the allure of winning the Prince George tournament keeps the Selects going back year after year.
"We're always disappointed when we lose, but have realized to win this thing, we'll need a couple of favourable bounces,” he said.
"We're consistently in the mix, and each year you kind of realize how close you are.”
This year's squad was thought to be the most talented yet, and got off to a hot start, beating a Prince George U-18 team 7-1 in their opening game.
Goals came from Kyle Risby (2), Pehar (2), Robin Stacey, Cody Reaume and Alejandro Pulido.
A hard-fought second game against Mr. Jake's Steakhouse was lost after the defending champions scored a late goal to go up 1-0.
Wii Not Fit beat a Smithers-based team 2-0 in the final to win $1,800. The runner-up took home $700.
