The Yukon Selects soccer team beat out Ontario 3-1 to secure a ninth place finish at the soccer nationals in Saskatoon.

"It was a nice way to end the tournament for our very young team as we had lost our previous four games,” said goalie George Maratos.

Gusty winds and -7 temperatures forced the games to be played inside, and officials decided to place games based on a shootout instead of full games.

"With the win we finish with the ninth seed for next years nationals, one spot ahead of Ontario,” said Maratos.

Peter Mather started the game off for the Selects, kicking the ball right down the centre past Ontario's goalie.

Ontario answered with a shot to the left corner of Maratos' net that he dove for and hit away.

The Yukon's second shooter was Mike Deluca.

"He hit a beautiful shot to the bottom left corner of the inside post and in,” said Maratos.

The score was now 2-0 for the Yukon.

Ontario's second shot hit the post when the Yukon had their first unsuccessful attempt at a goal.

"We were up two nothing however our third shooter hit the ball high over the crossbar,” said Maratos.

Any disappointment felt from the loss of the goal was quickly recovered when Maratos guessed correctly as to where to dive for Ontario's next shot, catching the ball by his finger as it found its way to the top right corner of the net.

"I dove and got a finger tip on it flicking it off the post and out,” he said.

Ontario's goalie stopped the ball on the Selects' fourth shot and the game seemed to have a brief change of momentum when Ontario scored a goal; on Maratos.

"Ontario shot to the bottom left. I dove left (and) got a finger on it, it hit the post and went off my back and in,” he said.

After Ontario's goal, the Yukon seized the game back sending Ammon Hoefs in for their fifth goal attempt. Hoefs scored the third and final goal for the Yukon.

"The victory marks the first time a Yukon soccer team has ever beat Ontario,” said Maratos.

The Yukon Selects goalie is heading back to the Yukon on a high note after the nationals.

"It was a pretty incredible moment to win that game, considering it went to a shootout, was played indoors and we were the only team not to have any university players on our team,” said Maratos. "It was truly my most memorable soccer moment to stop two of Ontario's shooters in the shootout.”
