Whitehorse skip Thomas Scoffin will lead the University of Alberta Golden Bears into the national championships tomorrow.

Canada’s top university teams will begin play Wednesday in the 2015 Canadian Interuniversity Sport-Curling Canada University Curling Championships at the KW Granite Club in Waterloo, Ont.

Eight teams of each gender will compete in the eighth edition of these championships, which begin with a round robin and conclude with finals Saturday.

Scoffin is one of the notable men’s skips, after appearing in a record seven M&M Meat Shops Canadian Juniors as skip – six for the Yukon and one for Alberta.

He is expected to battle with University of Winnipeg skipper Kyle Doering and University of New Brunswick skip Josh Barry, who recently played third for P.E.I. at the 2015 Tim Hortons Brier.

Scoffin’s University of Alberta counterpart Kelsey Rocque – a two-time consecutive reigning Canadian junior and world junior champion – headlines the women’s group.

Meanwhile, in Ottawa last weekend, two Yukon rinks finished with 1-6 records at the Canadian Mixed Doubles Curling Trials.

Fresh off a trip to the Brier, Yukon skip Bob Smallwood, alongside wife Jody Smallwood, could not recreate their 2013 magic, concluding the tournament with a 1-6 record.

The Smallwoods finished in the top-eight at the inaugural national mixed doubles trials in Leduc, Alta.

Patty Wallingham, who represented the Yukon at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts this year, paired up with P.E.I. lead Robbie Doherty, but also struggled to a 1-6 record.

The mixed doubles trials were held at the Ottawa Hunt and Golf Club. The event featured eight-end games with only six stones in play per end.

Alberta’s Kalynn Park and Charley Thomas won the event, a year after finishing as runners-up.

The win earns them a trip to Sochi, Russia, where they will compete at the 2015 World Mixed Doubles Championship next month.
