The 715-kilometre summer paddling race from Whitehorse to Dawson City hit its 100 boat capacity on Nov. 29. It’s the earliest the race has ever been full. For the 2016 race, it hit capacity in March.
Next summer’s race will feature two new boat classes: standup paddleboards (SUP) and C-4.
SUP was added as an official class after it was included as a trial in the 2016 race.
The SUPs delivered, performing admirably – the top three all finished in under 55 hours.
“It’s an up-and-coming sport. There’s a lot of interest in SUP,” said YRQ board member Peter Coates after the decision was announced. “There is interest. There is demand and there is no real apparent reason not to.”
C-4, a canoe with four members was also added as a class for next summer following it’s vogue appearance in many eastern races.
The last team to sign up was Valard Voyageurs, to make 100 boats.
Gaetan Plourde, who was part of 2016’s winning C-2 team, will be back next year and will don bib 1 as he takes on the race in a solo canoe.
Eleven countries are represented: Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, Japan, Netherlands, New Zealand, United Kingdom, U.S., and Togo.
The class breakdown is as follows: five open C-1, 20 K-1 (17 men and three women), 10 open SUP, 35 C-2 (20 men, six women, nine mixed), 14 K-2 (eight men, two women, four mixed) and 16 voyageurs (three C-4s, seven open, five women, and four mixed).
The 2017 Yukon River Quest runs from June 28- July 7.
