Yukon riders shine at the Tour of Fairbanks

Nine Yukon riders took part in the Tour of Fairbanks June 9-12 in the Alaska city.

Nine Yukon riders took part in the Tour of Fairbanks June 9-12 in the Alaska city.

Temperatures were in the mid to high 20s, with sunny skies for all of the race days except June 12th, when the road race started with temperatures in the low teens and rain.

Junior riders Allison Furniss and David Greer shone over four days and five stages of bike racing at the annual event. From Thursday through Sunday, the Yukon riders climbed a steep hill, rode a flat and fast time trial course and did multiple laps of some tough circuit courses in and around Fairbanks.

At the end of it all, Furniss walked away with the General Classification award in the Expert Women's class, winning all but two of her five races. Greer, only 16 years old, ended up fouth overall in the Men's Expert class.

Greer's accomplishment is even more impressive when you consider that he did it against some very good Category 1 riders from Anchorage. Category 1 refers to riders of an ability just below semi-professional bike racers.

But Greer and Furniss were not the only ones to take note of. Sam Lindsey, Troy Henry and Liam Kiemele, all junior riders but competing in the Expert Men's class, put in some great performances over the four days.

Other great rides were put in by Bill Curtis in the Sport Men's class, winning both the time trial and the long road race, and by Ken Kiemele and Grant Owen, also competing in the Sport Men's class.

The four days in Fairbanks were of particular importance to the Yukon junior riders Greer, Furniss, Kiemele, Henry and Lindsey as they served as preparation for the Canada Summer Games, coming up in August.

Yukon coach Owen, assisted by Kiemele and Bruce Henry, was very pleased with the level of effort put in by the young riders.

In other cycling news, Yukon's Daniel Sessford, competing in his first full year of mountain biking at the elite level, put in an outstanding performance at the Canadian championships this past weekend, held at Mont Ste. Anne in Quebec.

In a field that saw the two- time world champion and professiobal mountain biker, Roland Green, finish second, Sessford cracked the top thirty in a field of 65 by finishing 26th overall.

And Zach Bell was chosen to represent Canada at the prestigious Beauce Stage Race, which is also being held in Quebec this week.

This event attracts some of the finest trade teams from the U.S., Canada and Europe each year.
