Two Yukon orienteers represented the territory at the Western Canadian Orienteering Championships last weekend.

Jennifer MacKeigan and Nesta Leduc both made the trip down to Hinton, Alta., for the competition.

MacKeigan, who competed in the women 21+ category, was 10th in the middle distance, eighth in the long and fifth in the sprint.

Leduc competed in the women 80+ category and was first in the long and the sprint and second in the middle.

Last year, Whitehorse hosted the event.

The two women are joined at nationals this weekend by seven more Yukoners. Erik Blake, Leif Blake, Darryl Bray, Trevor Bray, Afan Jones, Forest Pearson and Sabine Schweiger will also compete in the three-day event.

The sprint and middle courses were due to be held at the Canmore Nordic Centre, but an early berry crop has attracted higher than normal numbers of bears to the area and Alberta Parks has closed the trail systems.

Instead, the long course will be held at Rafter Six Ranch in the Kananaskis Country on Sunday with the middle course on Saturday.

Today, race organizers announced that the sprint course would be moved to the University of Calgary.

It’s still uncertain if the relay will be rescheduled.
