Yukoner Justine Scheck competed at the North American Orienteering Championships near Cleveland, Ohio this past weekend.

The North American championships are held every two years and alternate between Canada and the United States. The terrain in Cuyahoga Valley National Park was very different from Whitehorse, with thick, deciduous woods and lots of streams and ravines.

Scheck adapted well to the new terrain and took first place in the female 15-16 years old category. Scheck swept both days of the two-day competition, completing the day one, 4.9-km course in one hour and 8 seconds, 6 minutes ahead of second place.

She won day two by running the 3.8-km course in 48 minutes and 16 seconds, increasing her lead to a decisive 24 minutes.

When asked how her day two race was, Scheck said, 'Pretty good. I didn't really make any mistakes.'

Scheck's next major competition will be the Canadian National Orienteering Championships, held in the Yukon, July 14-18.
