It took a couple of periods, but two goals scored midway through the third frame was all the Yukon News needed to get the first victory of the 2007-08 broomball season.
The team defeated Capital Towing by a score of 2-0, at the broomball rink off Range Road. It was a defensively-minded game, which saw both goalies make key saves when called upon.
'I think we played really well,' said Shayne Fairman, a player on Yukon News. 'It is really nice to get one game under our belts and have one win already.'
The Yukon News took advantage of a depleted Capital Towing team, who were missing five of their regular players in the game. One of these players included the team's
goaltender, who is also a member of the Tuesday Night Squash League. However, the substitute that was brought in did a great job as his replacement and was a big help in keeping Capital Towing in the game for the first two and a half periods.
Capital Towing could only sit one player at a time on the bench throughout the entire game.
The game started off with both teams trading chances, while the momentum seemed to shift back and forth throughout the first period.
Despite no goals being scored in the second, there was no shortage of excitement or scoring chances. The period ended with a breakaway that could have put Capital Towing up by a goal, but the shooter on the team ended up missing the far side of the net by the smallest margin.
This close call seemed to spark the Yukon News, who came out strong in the third frame and only got better as the period went on.
The first goal of the game was scored after an increased amount of pressure and a lot of shots on goal created a scramble around the Capital Towing net. Greg Blackjack was able to find the ball and put it in on a down-and-out Capital Towing goaltender.
The goal proved to be a major lift for the players on the Yukon News and less than three minutes later, the team would increase their lead to two, with a goal scored by Ryan Martin.
Martin scored coming out of the corner on the short side.
Regardless of being down by two, Capital Towing didn't give up and forced Yukon News' goaltender Chris Sawyer to make a number of difficult saves in the last 10 minutes of the game.
Fairman, who has been playing the league for 15 years, said the first goal was the turning point of the game.
'I think it was big boost, it put a little spring in our step,' he said. 'It was a pretty tight checking game until then and not a whole lot of great chances either way.'
He credited his goalie for helping the team get the victory.
'He was huge,' Fairman said. 'I expect we will be relying on him a lot this season. Chris is one of the best goalies in the league, so we are lucky to have him. I am looking forward to playing out in front of him.'
Megan Beauchesne plays for Capital Towing. She said she thought her team played a good game in the season opener.
'Our team played really well for how many players we had and for the first game of the season,' she said. 'I thought we were passing well and playing well, so it was a very good game.'
Beauchesne missed playing the annual Bob Park Ice Breaker Broomball Tournament and she was excited to be playing the sport again.
She said despite the loss, she was confident heading into the season.
'We are a good team, a strong team and a consistent team,' Beauchesne said. 'We'll pull up our socks. You can't bring out all the tricks on the first game.'
