For the second year in a row, the Yukon Mustangs swept their visiting Alaskan rivals in six games.
Last weekend the Yukon Mustangs U16 Minor Midgets faced off against the Juneau-Douglas High School (JDHS) Crimson Bears Senior Varsity team, while the U15 Bantam Mustangs took on the JDHS Junior Varsity Crimson Bears.
Yukon Mustangs assistant coach Carl Burgess said that it’s the second time the Crimson Bears have made the trip to Whitehorse to start off their season.
“We’re getting to know them quite well,” he said.
The games were generally one-sided, with the Mustangs dominating the scoreboard.
Burgess said that he and head coach Martin Lawrie are trying to get the Mustangs to all play together as a team.
“The trick is getting them all to perform at the same time,” he said. “When they do, they demonstrate themselves to be unstoppable and a force to be reckoned with.”
The Minor Midgets now face a road trip tournament in Alaska – the Alaska Wolves tournament, where the U16 team will be playing in the competitive U18 division – followed by hosting the Notre Dame Hounds for a five-game series at the beginning of December.
“We’re happy with how it’s coming together,” said Burgess. “The boys are putting in the work.”
