Yukon gymnasts return from West Coast competition with 12 medals

Four athletes from the Polarettes Gymnastics Club in Whitehorse travelled to Coquitlam, B.C., last weeked for their first competition of the year.

Four athletes from the Polarettes Gymnastics Club in Whitehorse travelled to Coquitlam, B.C., last weeked for their first competition of the year.

The 2005 West Coast Gymnastics Invitational took place Jan. 29-30 and the Yukon athletes brought home 12 medals, five of them gold.

The full results of the competition are as follows:

Level 2 Novice

Gina Sparling Bronze medal on bars, fourth on floor, sixth on vault and ninth all around.

Provincial 3 Novice

Sierra Palamar Gold medal on vault, silver medal on bars, bronze medal on beam, fifth on floor and gold medal all around.

Meghan Rodger Gold medal on floor, silver medal on vault, fourth on beam, sixth on bars and sixth all around.

This was Palamar and Rodger's first competition at the higher level and they claimed three of the five available gold medals.

Boys Level 4 Open

Jasper Martin Gold medal on floor, gold medal on pommel, silver medal on parallel bars, bronze medal on rings, fourth on vault, fourth on high bar and silver medal all around.

The three girls are currently preparing for the Mardi Gras Invitational in Sherwood Park, Alta., Feb. 19-20.

Martin's next competition will be the 2005 Jurassic Classic in Calgary next month.

All of the gymnasts are also preparing for the fourth annual Fitness Challenge, which will be held Feb. 13 at the Polarettes Gymnastics Club in Whitehorse.

The challenge goes out to any and all groups in the Yukon who can put together a team of five athletic people.

The teams will compete in a circuit of 10 events that will test strength, endurance, flexibility, balance, speed and teamwork.
