Yukon Engineering Services cruised to a comfortable four-point victory at the second annual EBA United Way Corporate Challenge Mixed Bonspiel Sunday at the Whitehorse Curling Club.

Yukon Engineering scored a total of 31 points over the course of four games that were played during the three day bonspiel.

"It was a good weekend, we enjoyed ourselves," said Lorraine Stick, the third on Yukon Engineering Services. "The Curling Gods were on our side."

This was Yukon Engineering's second straight year competing in the mixed bonspiel. Last year the team managed to finish in the top 10.

However, this past weekend's tournament featured a different scoring method that involved the use of an alternative points format. An alternative points system limits a team to just one point per end, which is scored by the squad that draws closest to the button.

The format also involved splitting up the different curling teams into four categories according to skill level. Yukon Engineering Services were slotted in category D.

Other bonspiels that feature the alternative points system at the curling club include the Canadian Tire Sportsmans Bonspiel and the ladies bonspiel.

The points breakdown included the overall total from the four games, which awarded one point each end as well as two for a win. The maximum amount of points a curling rink could get in one game was 10.

This year's EBA bonspiel saw an impressive increase in overall teams, which jumped from 12 teams to 18.

On Sunday, members of the top 10 teams got to chose an item from the prize contest. The prizes included toaster ovens, screw driver sets, packages of glasses, rifle carrying case, we have books and gift certificates.

In addition to the prizes, the top three teams were given an engraved display glasses, commemorating the bonspiel and their final standings.

The Thomas Scoffin rink placed second with 27 points, while third place was locked down by the Herb Balsam team.

The EBA bonspiel is also a fundraiser for the United Way, which this year raised close to $6,000. An extra $400 was raised by the Whitehorse Curling Club's donation jar over the course of the three days.

Dave Thompson, the chair of the bonspiel, said he was pleased with how it went this year.

"To make something like this successful, I organized it, but it was the volunteers who really make this thing go," he said. "We are trying to create more of a family atmosphere and it's beginning to come together because of all of the volunteers."
