Yukon FC played Gadeveng, a Danish team, in the Wiibroe Cup semifinal at the Tivoli Cup tournament in Denmark this morning.
Unfortunately, the U-18 boys took up where they left off Wednesday, according to head coach Dan Macdonald, who e-mailed the Star the full results this morning. They could not find their form at first and the game remained a rough and unpretty mix in the middle of the pitch.
Slowly, Yukon worked its way out of the funk and the momentum started to shift in their favor. A number of chances were created, with Matt Thomson striking one off the cross bar and Harrison Kwok having the rebound saved. Kwok knocked a loose ball in the six yard box over the cross bar after a corner.
Donny Richardson hit an excellent free kick from 35 yards out catching the keeper by surprise, but it hit the crossbar and the teams went into the half 0-0.
The Yukon onslaught continued in the second half, as Richardson again knocked a free kick off the bar. Countless Yukon buildups were either stymied as they tried to get into the box or just did not connect with the final pass.
Substitute Michael Johnson created a wonderful chance and forced a diving save by the 6' 6' keeper and Thomson attempted a cross on the rebound which the keeper gobbled up. Late in the second, Marshall Ewing broke through for a break away but the keeper saved it and the rebound was put wide.
In the final minute, a cross found Thomson at the back post and he headed it back across the goal where Ewing got a head on it to score what appeared to be the winner. However, the linesman's flag was up as the keeper had drawn ahead of Ewing while challenging Thomson.
The regular time ended 0-0 and the teams were headed for penalty kicks.
Gadevang shot first and the shooter placed an accurate, hard shot to the top right, catching Yukon goalie Nick Mauro going the wrong way. Johnson was the first Yukon shooter and his hard shot dipped under the diving keeper to find the back of the net.
The second Danish shooter approached the ball as to fire a hard shot and opened his hips at the last moment to pass it to the right, but even though Mauro started moving the wrong way, the player put the ball wide.
Jeff Hills calmly approached the ball to take the second Yukon shot, and with a quick stutter step froze the keeper before passing it into the lower right corner.
The third Danish player confidently approached the spot and placed the ball. His hard run resulted in a hard shot to the lower left corner, but a diving Mauro beat the ball there and it ended up safely cradled in his body.
Nick Locke shot next for the Yukon team, looking to provide a 3-1 lead and stranglehold on the kicks.
His approach to the ball was solid and he curled his foot at the last moment to catch the keeper going the wrong way and slotted it into the lower left corner.
The fourth Danish kicker approached and blasted a shot to the top right corner, giving Mauro no chance to end the game. So Eli Clements approached the ball for Yukon FC, knowing full well that a successful kick would finish the game for the Yukon side.
His large shoulders proved capable of supporting the responsibility, as he confidently placed the ball with a hard pass to the lower left in off the post, providing no chance to the keeper to resurrect his team's chances.
Jubilant Yukon players streaked to celebrate with Mauro and Clements in the penalty box. Grateful coaches made plans for a beer to calm their shattered nerves.
Yukon will now play for the Wiibroe Cup tomorrow at 12:30 p.m. Danish time, 3:30 a.m. in Whitehorse.
Meanwhile, Macdonald and assistant coach Jordan Kulicki will be playing in the Leaders Match today.
'We will attempt to maintain the level of respect for Yukon soccer that the boys have built up while here,' said Macdonald. 'We are both looking forward to getting on the pitch a bit.'
