Members of the Yukon cycling team stole the show at this year's Tour of Juneau bike race.

The competition was held earlier in August and featured three races over the course of three days.

The Yukon contingent won an impressive two out of the five categories and has a second place showing in the women's division.

The race was put on by the Juneau Freewheelers Bicycle Club, who had cyclists attend the Tour de Whitehorse race that was held back in July.

"It's been a while since we won it," said VeloNorth Cycling Club president Mike McCann, who also competed in the Tour of Juneau's expert category.

"There is a really nice relationship between the two cycling clubs. They enjoy coming here and racing."

The other three Yukoners were Troy Henry, who competed in the expert class, Nat Rodden, who was in the sport category and Kelsey Kabanak, who raced in the women's division.

Both Henry and Rodden won their individual categories, while Kabanak finished in an impressive second place in the women's division.

The first race featured an eight-km hill climb. The course was located on North Douglas Island and it went up to Eaglecrest. Riders in every category started at once in a mass start format.

Henry finished with the top time at 17:49, which just beat out his closest rival by 10 seconds.

Alaskan rider, Janice Sheufelt won the women's category with a time of 20:23, while Kabanak wasn't too far back, finishing the race at 24:15.

Rodden bested all competitors in the sport class with his time of 20:14. Rodden's time was more than one minute faster than the next best time in his category.

McCann finished in fifth place with a time of 18:55.

The next event was a time trial, which featured cold and raining conditions that competing cyclists had to deal with. The time trial was around 20-km race out and back, which Henry won in thrilling fashion, beating out another cyclist by a mere six seconds. His time was 28:42.

Sheufelt took the women's category for the second straight day, posting a time of 33:38, while Kabanak came in second at 36:53.

Rodden repeated as the fastest competitor in the sport class, finishing the race at 33:41.

A grueling road race concluded the Tour of Juneau. Henry finished in the top of the expert standings, posting a time of 2:19:57, while for a third straight race Kabanak finished in a very respectable second place at 2:39:06.

Rodden finished with the best time in the senior categories, finishing the course at 1:13:19 to take the sport class for the third race in a row.

Henry, who entered the competition with the goal of finishing in the top two, said he was pleased with his performance in Juneau.

"I would say I did well there," Henry said. "I was really happy with my performance."

Kabanak, who competed in the Tour of Juneau for the first time, said she was happy about finishing in second place in her category. Kabanak said her showing in the road relay was her personal highlight at the competition.

"I felt I just had a really strong race that one," she said. "I feel my last race was probably one of my personal bests."
