Junior curling sensation Thomas Scoffin's appearance on TSN yesterday capped off two weeks of major curling activity from some of the Yukon's finest.
The 19-year-old Scoffin was featured on Powerade 24, a series in which TSN is featuring 24 of Canada's future star athletes.
Scoffin was the main attraction of yesterday's feature piece, filmed at the Saville Centre in Edmonton, Alta.
"It means a ton,” Scoffin told the Star moments after the piece aired on the national sports television network. "I've worked really hard throughout my whole curling career to get where I want to be. Getting these recognitions shows me I'm on the right path.”
It was the latest high for Scoffin, who won a silver medal on the weekend as a spare for Brendan Bottcher's University of Alberta rink at the Canadian Interuniversity Championships in Regina, Sask.
Matt Dunstone's University of Manitoba rink took the final 7-5 in an extra end.
"It was super cool to be a part of that,” Scoffin said. "I learned a lot over the whole week. We made a good run at it until the finals. We played a really good game and if we play that game a couple more times, we're going to win it the majority of the time. It just came down to one shot in the extra end.”
In local curling action, Bob Smallwood's rink beat Herb Balsam's two games to none March 15 to win the territorial berth for the Mixed National Curling Championships, scheduled to occur in North Bay, Ont., Nov. 8 to 15.
Smallwood's rink consists of third Nicole Baldwin, second Wade Scoffin and lead Jody Smallwood.
The Smallwoods also competed in the Canadian Mixed Doubles Trials last week in Ottawa, winning two games in round-robin action.
"It was fun, but it was also a learning experience,” Smallwood said. "You've got to be more consistent at that game. Every shot is like a skip's last rock, basically. If you don't make it, there's going to be consequences.”
Andrea Sinclair, who played lead for Team Koltun at the 2013 Scotties, also played in the tournament, winning two games.
Yukoner Mitch Young would win four games at the event, but failed to advance to the playoffs due to a tiebreaking formula.
In Yellowknife, George Hilderman's rink has quietly put together its finest showing yet at the Canadian Senior Curling Championships this week.
With a 4-3 win over Quebec this morning, Hilderman's Yukon men's rink has improved to 5-5 with one game left to play versus first-place Manitoba later today.
The tournament marks Hilderman's fifth appearance at the senior championships. While the 61-year-old's team no longer has a chance at a playoff spot, he remains pleased with how his team has played in the N.W.T. capital.
"It's been a good run,” he said today. "There's only one game that we've been a little bit flat, and that was against Saskatchewan. Every other game, we took it right down to last rock.”
Hilderman's team – which also includes third Doug Gee, second Doug Hamilton, and lead Dale Enzenauer – beat Northern Ontario and Newfoundland in a pre-qualifying draw to earn a berth in the main draw.
"That was our main objective,” Hilderman said.
Following the senior championships, Hilderman will head to Coaldale, Alta., where he will lead the Yukon into the Canadian Masters Curling Championships to be held March 31 to April 6.
There, Hilderman will team up with third Gord Zealand, second Clarence Jack and lead Paul Warner to attempt to lead the territory to glory.
In Atlin, B.C., last week, Pat Paslawski's rink swept Edward Hale's Atlin rink two games to none to win their second straight berth into the Dominion Curling Club Championships.
The women's Atlin rink emerged victorious however, with Sherry MacInnis's rink defeating Laura Eby's Whitehorse team two games to one.
MacInnis's rink includes third Daniyel McNeil, second Bev Murphy and lead Janis Haper.
Game scores were not available at press time today.
The 2014 Dominion Club Curling Championships will be hosted by the Mayflower Curling Club in Halifax, N.S., Nov. 24 to 29.
Meanwhile, the Whitehorse Curling Club will be abuzz tonight with the first draw of the 62nd annual International Bonspiel taking place. The event will run with draws through Sunday.
Twenty men's teams and 14 women's teams are scheduled to compete in the weekend tournament, which features teams from the Yukon and Alaska.
