Team Hamilton from the Whitehorse Curling Club got their first victory of the Dominion Insurance Canadian Club Curling Championships in Richmond, B.C. on Wednesday morning.

The team, which consists of Scott Hamilton, Walter Wallingham, Ed Kormendy and Curtis Kuzma, faced off against Team Northwest Territories in what Hamilton described as a defensive battle.

"The score was 2-2 after seven but we got two in the eighth end with the hammer and won the game,” the skip said. "After going to the Mixed winless this is a very nice victory. Counting the first two here it's our first victory in 15 games so we're pretty happy.”

At the Canadian Mixed Curling Championship held in Sudbury last week Team Yukon was unable to come away with a victory posting an 0-13 record.

"Hopefully this has righted the ship,” said Hamilton. "We've got a few more games to go and the teams here are pretty equal caliber so we've got a shot; we just have to bring our ‘A' game.”

Also representing the Yukon Curling Association at the Championships is Team MacInnis from the Atlin Curling Club. Bev Murphy, Joanne Snobelen, Janis Harper, and Skip Sherry MacInnis complete the roster and will compete in the female division.

Fourteen teams from across the country are divided into two pools with the top two teams from each pool advancing to the Championship event to be held on Saturday.

Team Hamilton will now face New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and British Columbia to complete the preliminary round. Hamilton believes the team has a good chance to surprise the competition and continue to build momentum moving forward.

"All of them are pretty good teams as well, but like I say at this Club Championship anybody can beat anybody.”
