Yukon Cup brings alpine skiers to the slopes

Alpine skiers from the Yukon descended on Mount Sima on Saturday and Sunday to take to the slopes for the Yukon Cup, competing in Giant Slalom and Slalom.

Alpine skiers from the Yukon descended on Mount Sima on Saturday and Sunday to take to the slopes for the Yukon Cup, competing in Giant Slalom and Slalom.

The athletes first competed in the Giant Slalom (GS).

Charlie Hawes was the top U18 male finishing his two runs with a combined time of 1:13.733. Manas Toews, 1:23.765 grabbed second.

Greta Gladwin was the top finishing U16 female while Wesley Vangel took the U16 male race. Orin Gladwin was five seconds behind Vangel for second.

Tori Vollmer was atop of the field of five in the U14 female GS with a winning time of 1:17.070. Adelle Anderson and Jordan Minifie finished second and third.

Ryan O'Farrell was the top U14 male finisher.

Olivia Vangel finished 12 seconds ahead of the second place finisher Ellyann Dinn to win the U12 female race. Axel Anderson won the boys’ race well ahead of the competition with a combined time of 1:32.406. Owen Hogan finished 22 seconds slower.

Grace Allaway and Thomas Vollmer were the class of the U10 races while Gregory Yurkiv and Charlotte Anderson took the U8 honours.

Jeanne Burke was the lone female in the master class. Her total time was 2:06.891.

The male master class featured the biggest field of athletes at eight. Lyle Dinn posted the winning time of 1:15.600. James Minifie came in seven seconds behind and Cain Vangel rounded out the top three.

On Sunday, the skiers competed in the slalom event. In slalom, the poles are set closer together than in the giant slalom discipline.

Hawes found himself first again in the U18 male category capping his two races off with a time of 1:19.094. Toews took second.

Gladwin won the U16 female class.

Tori Vollmer secured her second top finish of the weekend, racing to a total time of 1:38.371. Jordan Minifie secured the second spot completing the race four seconds behind the top time.

Ellyann Dinn was the class of U12 female race for her first win of the weekend. Brandon Huffman got first place on the male side.

Molly Milner took the top spot in the U10 female slalom with a total time of 2:44.591. Thomas Vollmer once again found himself atop the boys' side.

Unlike the giant slalom, the slalom had a U8 male event. Gregory Yurkiv was the top finisher. He was followed by Lowell Minifie and Kade Hunter.

Lyle Dinn was once again the top of the master male class with a total time of 1:25.112. Dean Vollmer got second place and Cain Vangel once again found himself in third.
