GETTING IN A PRACTICE - Don White, the organizer of Sunday's Yukon Cross Country Championships is seen here during a Tuesday Night Fun Run. Many road racers in Whitehorse use the Tuesday runs as practice for major events such as the Klondike Road Relay and the upcoming Royal Victoria Marathon or the World Masters Games in Australia.

Whitehorse's racing community will be out this weekend at Mt. McIntyre for the Yukon Cross Country Championships.

The race will take over the Mt. McIntrye cross country ski trails for the afternoon on Sunday starting at 12 p.m.

"We've been doing this for better than 20 years,” said organizer Don White.

The event is one of Athletics Yukon's final events, and one of the last to get some much needed practice in before several important events on the road racing calendar.

In October many of Whitehorse's athletes are heading to the Royal Victoria Marathon in Victoria, B.C. and the World Masters Games in Australia to show the world what Yukoners can do.

White expects a few of those athletes to be out on Sunday to get some last minute laps of the ski trails in.

The course will follow the ski trails and participants will do loops based on their age.

"It's the same course of probably the last dozen years or so,” said White.

The event is family friendly for both spectators and participants. White says the youngest racer they've ever had tackle the course was six years old.

Usually though, the racers range in age from their preteens to 60 years old.

White doesn't know what to expect Sunday, as the number of participants generally depends on the unpredictable weather.

"We never know,” he said. Although the weather may not be reliable, White says they usually see between 12 and 15 runners.

The cost to participate for members of Athletics Yukon is $5, and $10 for non members. There will be refreshments for racers at the finish line and a concession for spectators.
