Yukon communities buy 150 WHL tickets in less than 30 minutes

Yukon communities from outside Whitehorse bought up the 150 available Western Hockey League tickets via phone in less than 30 minutes last night, said George Arcand, local organizing committee (LOC) vice-chair for Scotiabank's Hockey Day in Canada.
That hot ticket is to watch the heated WHL regular season match up between the Kamloops Blazers and Vancouver Giants at Takhini Arena on Feb. 12.
Four volunteers manned four phones last night with Arcand doing "the paper shuffle,” he said.
"We were able to handle everyone that could get through, and I know there's probably some disappointed people out there, based on the size of the arena and the number of tickets,” Arcand said.
"That piece now being done, we move on to Saturday for the last 150 tickets available for the game, and those are open to anybody.”
Doors open for the final sale at 11 a.m. at Sport Yukon on Saturday. Some 1,500 tickets for the Ottawa Senators vs. Dawson City Nuggets alumni game, scheduled for Takhini Arena Feb. 9, will go on sale the same time and place.
Tickets to the WHL game are $30 a pop while the alumni game tickets will sell for $10 each.
Fans from Dawson City, Burwash, Destruction Bay, Watson Lake, Ross River and Haines Junction are among those who nabbed the WHL tickets last night.
During a press conference Wednesday morning, WHL commissioner Ron Robison said the heated match up is enough to make the tickets a hot commodity in the Yukon.
"Only six points separate the five teams in the division and only three points separate Vancouver and Kamloops – this will be a very intense game,” Robison said.
The Giants – who won the Memorial Cup in 2007 – currently sit in second place in the B.C. Division with 45 points (20-18-1-4) while the Blazers – three-time Memorial Cup champs – are fourth in the division with 42 points (20-22-1-1).
Robison also pointed out key players to watch next month.
The Blazers boast one of the highest scoring lines in the WHL, with Chase Schaber, Brendan Ranford and Jordan DePape combining for 146 points this season.
The Giants boast stars of their own, with defenseman David Musil (son of former NHLer Frank Musil) among the top-ranked players for this year's NHL draft and Brendan Gallagher going as the fifth-round draft pick for the Montreal Canadiens.
Not to mention: Don Hay, one of the winningest coaches in junior hockey, formerly coached the Blazers and is now at the helm of the Giants.
"Both the Kamloops and Vancouver lineups will be very entertaining,” Robison said, adding:
"We play, we believe, a very important role, as does the National Hockey League and other major hockey constituents in this country, in promoting the growth of hockey throughout Canada, and we're delighted to have this opportunity to visit Whitehorse, participate in the community, and hopefully promote hockey throughout the Yukon.”
