Climb Yukon will be hosting the Yukon Climbing Championships this Sunday at the Porter Creek Secondary School bouldering gym.

According to a Climb Yukon press release, the competition is a qualifier for Yukon youth climbers vying to

represent the territory at Western Canadian Championships and ultimately Nationals.

The competition is open to interested climbers of all skill levels, and will feature multiple categories and prizes donated from Yukon Built, Mt. Sima, Mountain Exposure, Coast Mountain Collective, Solution Volumes, and other local Yukon businesses still to be confirmed.

Registration for the competition is ongoing until this Friday, Feb. 16.

“The Yukon Championships are an opportunity for our youth climbers to really push themselves at this

point in the season,” said Gerard Garnier, head coach of Climb Yukon’s youth programs. “They’ve been

training hard all year and friendly competitions like this are great for measuring progress and growth.”

The Yukon competitive youth team will be heading to Victoria in March before qualifying climbers take onthe field in Calgary at Westerns in April.

“It’s an exciting time to be a competitive climber in the Yukon,” said Garnier.

“With the new gym coming, soon we’ll be able to train on walls that meet National Championship standards and this can only do wonders for our climbers’ development so that eventually we’re making noise on the national and maybe even global stage."
