The Yukon Cross Country Ski Championships were held this past Saturday in Whitehorse, and 75 racers took part under near perfect conditions, with clear skies and a temperature of -7 C.
Nostalgia brought out a large number of older skiers to race the World Cup 10 kilometre and the Pierre Harvey 15 km trails for the last time, as subdivision development this summer will change their present configuration.
David Greer took top spot in the 15-km open men's category with a time of 46 minutes and 18 seconds, followed by Alain Masson in hot pursuit at 48:15. Logan Potter, skiing up from the juvenile boys category', finished third in an impressive 50 minutes.
The open women's 10-km race was claimed by Yukon ski team members Emily Nishikawa, in first at 34:29, Janelle Greer in second at 35:42, and Brittany Smith in third at 36:04.
Nishikawa and teammate David Greer received the Gordon Taylor Memorial Trophy for the fastest female and male times on the course.
Juvenile, midget and mini-midget racers also competed over five-km and 2.5-km distances, with Dahria Beatty and Trevor Bray winning the Schiffkorn Trophy for the fastest times for skiers 14 years and under.
The day was topped off with a volunteer recognition barbecue sponsored by Grey Mountain Lions, followed by a potluck celebration that evening for the ski team.
It was a fitting end to the best season the Yukon cross-country ski team has ever seen, with three medals at the Canada Winter Games and 17 medals at the national championships.
