A furious comeback attempt by The Soccer Shoppe ended with a last-second shot clanging off the crossbar during the Senior Metro Soccer League's championship final.

Despite some late penalty trouble, Yukon Brewing held on to win 4-3 Friday night in front of a delighted crowd at the Canada Games Centre.

Caleb Kelly led the way with a pair of goals. Jono Runions and Tristan Olynik also found the back of the net to put Yukon Brewing ahead early.

University of Victoria women's star Jackie Harrison scored twice to get The Soccer Shoppe's comeback started, while Harrison Kwok had the other.

Bryce Voogd's last-second shot in injury time hit the crossbar and bounced out.

Moments later, league president Alejandro Pulido awarded Kelly the Senior Metro Cup.

"They gave us a run for our money,” Kelly said of his team's victory. "I think we were a bit fortunate in the end to win, because they were kind of peppering our net pretty good. They gave us a good ride.”

The championship game was a reversal from last year's final, which saw Kelly's squad finish second.

"It just feels good to come through in the end with the same guys,” the 20-year-old said. "We were short some men behind the bench, so it feels good to grind it out.”

Kwok gave full credit to Yukon Brewing for their victory.

"Hats off to the other team,” the 27-year-old told the Star post-game.

"They finished their goals. We had a lot of chances, but we let up one unfortunate goal and that was the difference.”

Kelly's second strike of the game missed the net before bouncing off a Soccer Shoppe defender and into the goal.

"It was a good team effort the last five minutes to try to get the comeback win,” Kwok added.

In the semifinal, Kwok scored the winning goal in penalty kicks to give his team a berth in the championship.

The Senior Metro Soccer League featured four teams this season.

In the third-place game, ORC beat ACME 6-4 to close out their season.

Boris Hoefs and Ashley Jordan each scored twice in the win, with Matt Larson and Stephen McGovern chipping in singles.

Dom Pehar had a pair for ACME in a losing cause. Pat Zuccarini and Owen Hedstrom-Langford rounded out the scoring.

"The whole season has been close,” Pulido said of the league's competition level. "Every game was close. There was only two or three blowouts in the season.

"So overall, I think it's been the tightest year that I've played.”

The league provides a chance for the territory's elite players to match skills with one another, Pulido added.

"It's really the only thing that we have competitively for soccer here in the Yukon,” he said. "You need that competition to develop as a player and a person.”

With the indoor season over, Pulido said plans are now in the works to create an outdoor summer league.
