Members of Team Yukon returned from the Special Olympics Canada Summer Games in London, Ont. with big smiles Sunday – and even bigger results.

After four days of competition, the athletes racked up 12 medals and numerous personal bests. The soccer team finished with a silver medal, which is the best ever result for the Special Olympics Yukon soccer team at the Games.

In another first for the squad, Marvin Hall won gold in his individual division of five-pin bowling. No Special Olympics Yukon athlete had ever won gold in bowling.

Overall, the Yukon bowling team finished seventh.

In athletics, Owen Munroe grabbed two gold medals, while Jessica Pruden collected a silver and two bronze.

BJ McKay and Cole Robinson-Boivin found equal success in swimming, McKay winning two gold medals as well as a bronze, and Robinson-Boivin picking up a gold and a bronze.

"It was fantastic,” stated Serge Michaud, executive director of Special Olympics Yukon. "The word we've been throwing around all week is proud.”

"It was the first time we've sent more than one athlete in both swimming and track.

The dynamic between the two athletes made a big difference. They had someone else with them, cheering them on.

"The soccer team, not only winning a silver medal, but it's the first time a Yukon team had beat an Ontario team, at any Games. So that was pretty special.”

Michaud said London did a great job of organizing the Games, and the athletes had a blast during their stay.

"Best (Games) ever, no question. The city of London was amazing. Every single athlete came back with a big smile on their face.

"There were so many personal bests, and that's what our goal has always been.”
