Alex Petriw fought hard to earn a bronze medal at the 2014 Swim B.C. Short Course AA Championships.

Just two Whitehorse Glacier Bears swimmers attended the meet in Chilliwack, which was held Feb. 28 to March 2.

Petriw claimed his third-place finish in the 800 Free. Another highlight saw both Petriw and teammate Cassidy Cairns qualify for the 200 Free final, finishing sixth and seventh, respectively.

Head coach Malwina Bukszowana said both swimmers performed well, improving their times in every race. More importantly, she added, their technique improved with each new swim.

"This was a weekend with a few good lessons for both of them,” she said. "They both were very well organized and always ready for their races.

"They never complained, remembered their warm-ups, their steps before each swim, and even were able to analyze some of their own races after they got out, and they knew what we needed to work on. This is a great step.”

Petriw showed his mettle in the 400 Free, shaking off a crash with another swimmer who was sharing his lane.

The young swimmer overcame a bruised head and a few scratches on his chest, refusing to complain or quit.
