Yukon soccer players are currently gaining experience at tournaments across the globe.

The local season just entered its busiest stretch, with teams from the territory participating at the USA Cup in Blaine, Minn., as well as the Gothia Cup in Sweden.

The Yukon Striker Selects currently boast a 2-1 record at the USA Cup, recording 3-0 and 6-0 wins, before dropping a tight match by a 1-0 score this morning.

The week-long tournament follows a weekend event that saw the team advance to the A flight quarter-finals, only to lose 3-2 on a second-half rally by a strong Wisconsin team.

The Yukon Striker Selects are coming off their third straight Alaska Airlines Cup win in June.

Aside from the Yukon Striker Selects team, five local girls are also participating in the USA Cup tournament as guest players with a U16 Anchorage squad.

Christine Moser, Malorie Hanson, Line Jensen, Thea Carey and Jamie Joe-Hudson are members of the Futbol AK Select Chicas.

The club is currently 2-0 in the U16 silver category, winning its first two games 9-0 and 5-0.

The USA Cup features more than 1,150 teams, according to Striker Selects coach Jake Hanson.

The event is the largest youth soccer tournament in North America, at the largest outdoor soccer complex in the world, he added.

Meanwhile in Sweden, the U16 Yukon Strikers finished 0-4 in their group, suffering losses of 6-0 to a Swedish team, 4-0 to another Swedish squad, 7-1 to a group from Germany and 4-2 to a Norway club.

The team went on to lose its quarter-final playoff match 12-0 to a team from Germany.

The Gothia Cup is the largest youth soccer tournament in the world.
