Young Glacier Bears dominate Dino Cup
Whitehorse Glacier Bear Rennes Lindsay couldn't lose.
Whitehorse Glacier Bear Rennes Lindsay couldn't lose.
The eight-year-old was one of nine Glacier Bears to compete in the Dino Cup swim meet at the University of Calgary this past weekend.
The meet is a great way for young swimmers to gain racing experience at an Outside event, with 15 teams from across Alberta, British Columbia and the Yukon competing.
The age groups were seven and under, eight and under, nine and under and 10 and under.
Seven girls – Rennes Lindsay, Cassis Lindsay, Celeste Findlay, Dana Sellars, Hannah Kingscote, Shailyn Moore and Erin McBryan – and two boys – Liam Diamond and Alexander Petriw – made up the Glacier Bears team.
Everyone at the meet swam numerous best times.
But it was Rennes who nabbed gold in all eight of her races.
Findlay also stepped up to win five gold, one silver and one bronze.
In the 10-year-old group, Cassis swam to a bronze in both the 50-metre freestyle and the 50-m backstroke.
Kingscote's top placings were a third in the 25-m fly and fifth in the 25-m freestyle.
Sellars finished seventh in the 25-m backstroke and 12th in the 25-m fly.
Shailyn Moore was 10th in the 25-m breaststroke and 15th in the 25-m freestyle.
McBryan's best results were ninth in the 25-m fly and 14th in the 50-m fly.
For the boys, Diamond's best placings were a sixth in the 25-m breaststroke and eighth in the 25-m fly.
Petriw took fifth in the 25-m backstroke and seventh in the 25-m breaststroke.
The Glacier Bears also had a strong showing at last year's Dino Cup.
All seven of the swimmers at last year's meet earned personal best times in almost all of their events.
Several swimmers placed in the top eight in their events.
Rennes placed first in every one of her events, which earned her the aggregate winner award for the seven and under girls age group.
Findlay also placed second in two events in the eight-year-old group last year.
