On Sunday, Sept. 23, the Yukon Conservation Society (YCS) will host its inaugural Leave No Trace Scavenger Hunt Race.

This is not your average run or walk event it's part race, part scavenger hunt, part orienteering and all fun.

'The Yukon Conservation Society is thrilled to be hosting this annual community event. The fall is such a great time to get out and enjoy the incredible trails in the Yukon. We are simply sharing an opportunity with the community to get out and have an amazing day of fun on the trails,' says YCS President Wendy Morrison.

'Leave No Trace is an ethic and practice that enables outdoor fun and adventure while minimizing our impacts on the environment. We are excited to be designing our run/walk event around the principles of Leave No Trace, principles which are cornerstone to the YCS philosophy,' adds Georgia Greetham, YCS staff.

Participants of Leave No Trace can choose between the three-four kilometre leisurely walk or the eight-km competitive run.

Teams will start at the Schwatka Lake boat ramp parking lot and will follow markers on the ground to find their way through a maze of trails. While following the right trail, teams will also be on the look out for a variety of 'hidden' items along the way.

A group of local artists and volunteers will be using their creative energies to leave items along the trail for the walkers and runners. An example of a Leave No Trace item might be a tower of pine cones or a rock statue. Participants will have to have keen eyes to find some of the items.

For walkers, finding the most items will get their team prizes. For runners, finding items will get time off their run time and will help determine who are the top teams.

Registration fee for the race is $25 for adults and kids are free. All proceeds from the fundraising event will go to support the Yukon Conservation Society. Team assignment starts at 1:30 p.m. and the race starts at 2 p.m.

The race will be followed by the YCS annual fall potluck at the YCS office at 302 Hawkins Street.

'YCS potlucks are one of the Yukon's best kept secrets,' says Morrison.

Interested participants, artists and volunteers can contact Georgia at the YCS office for more information.
