The Yukon Broomball Association (YBA) season may have been cut short because of the warm weather, but that didn't stop all the teams getting together for the end of year awards banquet last Saturday at the Kwanlin Dün Cultural Centre.
Once everyone was happily fed, the presentations began, with the team MVP awards being announced first.
Julie Pruden, a defenceman for Ridge Pub, was her team's female MVP. Pruden said she was surprised by the team's choice.
"I am extremely flattered to get voted because everyone is so amazing on the Ridge," said Pruden. "It is a huge honour."
The banquet progressed to the league awards. Winners were voted on by every team in the league.
Kyle Nault, from the Fireweed Shooters, won the goalie award. It was Nault's third consecutive win.
"It means a lot, but it is a team sport," said Nault. "I do my best. If you look around the league, there is a lot of high-quality goalies. The competition makes getting the award much more meaningful."
Underhill Wookies forward Justin Saunders won the male MVP award. Saunders played in 22 games posting 27 goals and 12 assists. It was his third consecutive MVP award.
"I started when I was 14, so it's been years of practice," said Saunders. "I play on an awesome team. I just like to come and play. It is a great community and a great group of people."
Katie Vanderstelt of the P&M Crushers was the female MVP. Vanderstelt posted three goals and one assist.
Yukon Brewing's Dave Hopkins and the Crushers' Sheena Laluk were named as the leagues best defencemen.
The most improved awards went to Andre Lebel and Gina MacLeod. The rookie of the year awards was given to Kyle Blahy and Lianne Charlie.
The Tom Tom trophy, is “an annual award given to the player adjudged to have exhibited the best type of sportsmanship and gentlewomanly conduct combined with a high standard of playing ability.” The award went to James MacDonald.
Dave Stehelin won the Zebra Award for refereeing.
Unable to finish the playoffs the league went without a champion. The Underhill Wookies won the presidents trophy for the regular seasons' top team.
The teams in the YBA will now turn their attention to the Haines Junction tournament this weekend.
