With the daylight shrinking, it's that time of year when local basketball players are eager to hit the hard court.

Those registered in the Whitehorse Women's Basketball League (WWBL) are no exception.

League play began with two games on Oct. 24 and will continue through to April, with the next set of games coming up Thursday, starting at 8 p.m. at Vanier Catholic Secondary School.

Games run 7 p.m. and 8:15 p.m. on Sundays at F.H. Collins and 8 p.m. and 9:15 at Vanier on Thursdays.

WWBL president Diedre Davidson said the league blends a fun way to get in some exercise with stiff competition.

Beginners and experienced players alike can easily adapt to the intensity of the league, she added.

"We have players who are just starting this year, or maybe have played some junior high or high school, all the way up to college and university players,” Davidson said.

"It's competitive in that we try to make the teams equal, so if there's an ex-university player on one team there'll be an ex-university player on the other, and if there's a new person on one there'll be a new person on the other. We try to make the teams equal caliber. But again, it's also very, very fun.”

And anyone who missed out on registration can still sign up by can contacting

Davidson at 334-8786 or diedred@gmail.com. Registration cost is $150 for the whole season.

New players, both beginners and experienced alike, are welcome.

"There's definitely new people that come out every year and then there's also the crew that's always around,” she said.

"To be honest, for the most part everyone is just coming out for the exercise, and the competitiveness depends on who's playing. If there's a player that is the same caliber as you are then you're generally matched up with them.”

Thursday's games will see Airport Chalet tip off against the Kopper Kweens at 8 p.m. and Feature Foods take on Takhini Gas at 9:15 p.m.
