The Whitehorse Women's Hockey Association (WWHA) is ready to play and looking for kick-ice women to join the league.
Skills camps happen mid-September and games start Oct. 1. Players of all levels are welcome and can visit the brand new website for information.
The league is one of the many ice-user groups who were waiting to hear how June's deliberately-set fire at the Canada Games Centre would impact their season.
"The City staff has been very helpful” said association president Michelle Rabeau. "They have shuffled the schedule around to ensure that we will have enough ice time to support five teams.”
The WWHA has been a fast-growing league, increasing from four teams and 60 players in 2009/10 to 75 players and five teams in 2010/11.
This year's focus will be on building skill and speed. The season starts with week- long beginner and intermediate skills camps, funded by Lotteries Yukon.
Instructor Cheryl Rivest said players can expect to learn everything from "putting your gear on in the right order to special team strategy”.
Lotteries Yukon is also funding ice time for team practices. Rabeau said the WWHA surveyed members last year and learned that almost everyone wanted more opportunities to learn and practise with their teams.
"Most of our learning has been trial by fire, which has led to chaos on the ice,” Rabeau said.
"Now we can finally have someone yelling at us to get into position!”
This is all part of the WWHA's five-year plan.
"We are putting a lot of energy and resources into increasing capacity,” Rabeau said. "We want to build a skilled and competitive league.”
Registration is on now at Sport Yukon. Beginner skills camp will run Sept.11-15 and Intermediate will run Sept. 18-22.
The league season will start Oct. 1 and end in March. Information is available on their website
