CANUCKS WIN – Canucks player Ben Power breaks out of his own zone against the Wild in the tykes final at the Canada Games Centre Sunday afternoon.
Our Canucks won in the tykes final.
Our Canucks won in the tykes final.
We'll have to wait and see if those Vancouver Canucks follow suit.
The younger Canucks edged out the Wild 7-2 in the tykes final of the minor hockey year end tournament held at the Canada Games Centre Sunday afternoon.
"We were excited that we won and we all piled on the goalie,” Canucks player Marko Cooper said.
Canucks head coach Matt Power said all the tykes players had fun and battled all weekend.
"They put everything out there, it was great to see,” Power said, adding of the final:
"Even though it was so challenging and there was a lot of effort into it, we wanted them to just have a nice fun game, and I think that's what came out. I was really happy to see that, and both coaches agreed it was just a fun game; that's what the game comes down to.”
Canucks player Ty Beacon sniped five goals, while teammates Ethan Candow and Cooper added their other two.
"Ty is just one of those players that he leaves everything out on the ice,” Power said. "He doesn't give up. He's just 110 per cent that kid, he never stops, and you'll always see him if he's out on the ice; he's always after the puck. By far our best player.”
Power noted that Beacon is a first year.
"He's ready to go to novice. He's ready to go to the next level, there's no doubt about it.”
Zeb Blower scored the Wild's two goals.
The Canucks dropped one game in the tournament, a shootout loss to the Flames after being down 7-3, coming back to make it 8-7 and conceding a goal with less than two minutes left in the third.
"Those stands were really loud,” Power said. "It was a great weekend. Everybody just showed up.
It was really good to see. Hockey's alive and well in Whitehorse.”
On the importance of having fun at the tykes level, Power added: "That's number one for me, and I've been stressing that all year long. You could talk about winning all you want. At this level, these kids, they really strive to win. But you think about it, you got to put it into perspective: winning is going to come – and so is losing – but if you can keep fun in the game, that is the key to it. And it's what these kids have certainly learned this weekend.”
