Scott Williams placed first in the Sportlife Thursday night trail run, which took the swift on an 11.7-kilometre loop from the Miles Canyon Bridge along Schwatka Lake.
The going got tough on the series of hills at the end of Schwatka near the Whitehorse Fish Ladder.
Many of the runners walked to catch their breath on a stretch after one hill before tackling the massive incline.
The route was leg four of the Yukon River Trail Marathon (YRTM), the registration for which is open.
The YRTM is set to start Aug. 7 at 8:30 a.m. for the full marathon, 9:15 a.m. for the relay and 10 a.m. for the half marathon. Half marathon walkers start at 8:30 a.m.
The start/finish location will be held in Shipyards Park (on the east end of Ogilvie Street).
