Officials from the Western Hockey League and CBC were in town yesterday meeting with the local organizing committee to discuss the venue for the WHL regular season game planned for Feb 12, during Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada celebrations being held in Whitehorse.

"With the addition of the WHL game to the events it made sense for us to move our main host location to Takhini Arena where we can accommodate more fans and residents of the Yukon,” stated Joel Darling, director of production CBC Sports.

Organizing committee vice chair George Arcand agreed the move to Takhini was the right one.

"We are pleased that we have been able to get the venue for the WHL game changed,” Arcand said.

"Access for fans was key as well as revenues from ticket sales to help offset the costs of hosting this game.”

Tickets for the game and other events are expected to go on sale in early December.

The final schedule of activities is being developed by the organizing committee and sponsorship support will be sought from the local community.

Hockey Day in Canada events are still being planned for the Canada Games Center and Shipyards Park, as well as Takhini Arena.

A volunteer sign up will be held Sunday from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. in the lobby of the Canada Games Center.

Last week, co-vice chair Ranj Pillai told the Star that the inclusion of the WHL game changed the organizing

"The plan is coming together and as we solidify the committee and times and dates information will be shared with all Yukoners,” Pillai said.

"We are all excited about the possibilities and really pleased that the WHL and CBC agreed to this venue change.”
