Whitehorse's Berryman, Murphy take overall titles
The Tour de Whitehorse was contested over the past weekend.
The Tour de Whitehorse was contested over the past weekend. Commencing on Friday night with a two-kilometre hill climb up the South Access, 30 riders took the challenge under ideal conditions.
Fastest up the hill and taking the General Classification lead in the Men's Expert category was Glen Iceton from Whitehorse. He was closely followed by Mac Hislop, also from Whitehorse, and John Bursell from Juneau.
Whitehorse's John Murphy was the fastest Novice Male rider while Joanne Weninger from Saskatoon led the Sport Women and Nathan Leenders from Whitehorse the Sport Men. In the Women's Expert class, Janice Sheufelt from Juneau was quickest.
Day 2 saw all riders complete the individual time trial. This 33.5-km race against the clock took them from the top of the South Access, south on the Alaska Highway to a point just a few kilometers past the Carcross Cutoff. At this point, they turned and returned back to the Visitor Rest Area at the top of the South Access and the finish.
Quickest on the day was Mike McCann in the Expert Men category, covering the distance just one second over 48 minutes. Sheufelt solidified her lead in the Women's Expert class with her second win, as did Murphy in the Novice Men and Weninger in the Sport Women. John Berryman from Whitehorse took over the lead in the Sport Men division with a convincing win.
Just when you thought the weather couldn't get any better, Day 3 was hot, sunny and the perfect backdrop for some exciting racing. The long road race concluded the Tour with Novice Men and Sport Women racing 70 km, Sport Men and Expert Women 80 km and Expert Men 90 km.
In the Novice Men's class, Murphy made it three for three by winning the road race and as a bonus took home the trophy as the General Classification winner, for having the lowest accumulated time total in his class lowest.
Though Weninger lost to Whitehorse's Tanya Gadsby, she still managed to win the overall in Sport Women category.
Darren Holcombe had a solid ride in winning the Sport Men's road race, but it was Berryman who held onto the overall lead and was crowed the General Classification winner.
Allison Furniss from Whitehorse nipped Sheufelt from Juneau at the line to take the Expert Women road title, but it was the strength of Sheufelt's performance over the three days that netted her the overall win.
In the Men's Expert category, Bursell was only 27 seconds out of first place heading into the 90 km road race. When the dust had settled, Bursell was crowned champion when he finished third, one second behind winner Iceton and second place rider Troy Henry.
