It came down to two Whitehorse teams battling for top spot in Haines Junction.
It came down to two Whitehorse teams battling for top spot in Haines Junction.
Yukon Office Supplies defeated Skookum Asphalt 9-2 in the gold medal game of this year's Yukon Atom Hockey Championships in Haines Junction over the weekend.
Two more Whitehorse teams battled it out in an earlier match up for the bronze medal.
Envirolube downed the all-girl Gold Rush Gang in a hard fought 7-4 game for third place.
Rounding out the eight team tournament, Teslin, Juneau, hosts Haines Junction and Watson Lake finished the tournament in fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth respectively.
Some 120 boys and girls from Alaska and throughout the Yukon took part in this annual celebration of hockey for nine and 10 year olds.
Four teams from Whitehorse and teams from Haines Junction, Juneau, Teslin and Watson Lake fought it out in the round robin portion of the tournament on Friday and Saturday.
One of the most exciting games of the opening round was the match up between two evenly matched rivals from Teslin and Watson Lake.
The Teslin team eventually defeated the kids from southeast Yukon 2-1.
At the end of the round robin, Yukon Office Supplies and Skookum Asphalt were both undefeated.
Major supporters of the tournament were Haines Junction Minor Hockey Association, the community of Haines Junction and the Yukon Amateur Hockey Association.
As in past years, the Saturday night festivities were a highlight of the weekend. The people of Haines Junction came together and offered a great spaghetti dinner to all of the tournament participants.
Many players at the banquet received door prizes, with many of them being brought by our American friends in Juneau.
Goalies Matthew McBride of Yukon Office Supplies and Cole Smith of Skookum Asphalt were recognized for having the best goals against average during the round robin, while Ole Heath of Haines Junction and Aaron Chaput of Whitehorse were recognized as the Goalies with the Biggest Hearts.
Then the evening finished off with a game of shinny for the adults and a movie in the Grand Hall of the St. Elias Centre for the kids.
Sunday morning, every team moved into the playoff round, with the end result of Yukon Office Supplies being crowned as the 2011 Yukon Atom Hockey Champions.
The organizers want to thank everyone that helped put on the tournament and they send congratulations to all participants in the 2011 Yukon Atom Hockey Championships this past weekend in Haines Junction.
