Members of the ElderActive Recreation Association mixed business with pleasure this past weekend.
The group followed up its AGM with its first Whitehorse games day of 2009.
The games day, held Friday and Saturday, mixed a variety of sports included floor curling, bowling, orienteering, carpet bowling, shuffle board and a number of different card games.
The ElderActive Recreation Association has approximately 200 members throughout the Yukon.
Besides Whitehorse, participants this weekend included individuals from Atlin, Teslin, Mayo and Tagish.
Earlier in the year, the group held games days in both Teslin and Atlin.
Embroideries were given out for all first-second-and-third place finishes this weekend.
Madeline Boyd, a board member for ElderActive Recreation Association, was one of the participants this weekend.
On Friday, Boyd tried orienteering for the first time and said it was a lot of fun.
"It was good, (organizer) Nesta (Leduc) was really tricky," she said. "I always wondered what they did out there in the bush, looking for things.
"I couldn't figure it out, so I thought 'OK, I am going to give this a try.'"
She said it was easier than she thought it would be.
A yearly membership for the ElderActive Recreation Association costs $10. The group will put on another games day in Whitehorse in the fall.
The association encourages outlying communities to take an interest in the various games played and even offers them special deals, like selling equipment at half of the normal retail price.
Equipment can include carpets for carpet bowling and shuffle board courts.
Bill Simpson, president of the ElderActive Recreation Association said about 71 attended the AGM.
"We had a good turnout we think for our meeting and everyone enjoyed themselves."
