Five swimmers from the Whitehorse Glacier Bears were in Fairbanks this past weekend to compete in the annual Wishbone Invitational meet.
The swimmers had a small advantage over the American swimmers in the switch over from metres to yards.
"Several swimmers commented that they liked swimming the longer butterfly events and 200 individual medley races in the shorter yard pool, as the end of the distances came that much sooner than a metre pool,” said coach Kathy Zrum.
The shorter pool allowed the Whitehorse swimmers to place in the top five in each of their events.
The Glacier Bears kicked off the meet by joining the Haines Dolphin Swim Team to create two relay teams.
"(It) provided the swimmers with an opportunity to try out their newly practiced and nearly perfected relay takeovers,” said Zrum.
Coach Zrum was impressed with her young swimmers throughout the weekend.
"The swimmers worked exceptionally hard at ensuring they executed good turns and stroke technique for each of their races,” she said.
Zrum says the weekend was a good chance to show what their weekly training sessions have done for their technique and abilities.
"This meet was a wonderful opportunity for the swimmers to see how the benefits of the weekly training sessions have helped them improve their swimming skills,” she said.
No club records were achieved at this meet, but personal goals were broken one after the other.
"Although no club records were broken this past weekend congratulations are extended to all swimmers for getting the swim season off to a great start and for the Bears to once again make their bear mark in the north,” said Zrum.
Newcomers Camille Saunders and Tynan Leong-Best did well in their events, with Saunders taking first in the 100 yard backstroke, fourth in the 200 yard free, third in the 50 yard fly and third in the 100 individual medley.
Leong-Best placed third in the 200 yard breaststroke and fourth in the 50 yard free.
Luke Bakica came fourth in the 100 yard free and fifth in the 100 yard breaststroke.
Jessica Bakica came in fifth place in the 200 yard free.
Nicole Wawryk placed third in the 100 yard fly and fourth in the 200 yard individual medley event.
Jessica Bakica achieved six personal bests after the weekend; Luke Bakica scored five and Leong-Best, Saunders, and Wawryk each had seven.
