Twelve swimmers in the Whitehorse Glacier Bears program went up against B.C.'s finest in a four-day provincial competition, which was held in Richmond.
The meet was the B.C. Provincial Long Course Championships and for 11 of the Yukon contingent it was the final meet of the season.
"They are all a committed, dedicated crew of swimmers," said Kathryn Zrum, the Glacier Bears co-coach at the meet. "This is a swim meet of over 600 swimmers of the best in British Columbia. To achieve the 'AAA' is a good result right there and then to go to that championship and get anywhere from 10th, 12th place finishes is quite an accomplishment."
With the high number of swimmers competing in Richmond, this was one of the more crowded meets attended by the Glacier Bears Swim Club. Many of competitors saved their best swims for the last at the meet, which saw slower times in preliminary competition compared to the finals.
The B.C. championships use a long course, which features a 50-m pool. This is one of few competitions that the Glacier Bears attend that uses a long course facility.
The two coaches at the meet were Zrum and Jim Thompson, who were both pleased with their swimmers results at the competition.
The 12 Glacier Bears swimmers included Craig Berube, Tanner Cassidy, Spencer Edelman, Brice Harding, Josh Kelly, Jason Zrum, Kirsten Berube, Hayley Bielz, Erin O'Connor, Isabel Parkkari, Bronwyn Pasloski and Molly Purser.
There were many highlights for the Glacier Bears in the competition and on the top of the list included Bronwyn Pasloski winning a pair of gold medals in the 100-m and 200-m breast stroke.
Pasloski, who competed in the girls 16-and-over category, bested both her preliminary times with both of her first place performances. She swam the 100-m breast stroke in 1:12.17, which was more than five seconds faster than her preliminary time in the same distance. Her time in the 200-m breast stroke was 2:37.58.
Pasloski also showed off her skills as a free style swimmer, placing fifth in the final for the 50-m free with a time of 27.89.
This was a working swim meet for Pasloski, who will compete at both Age Group Nationals in Calgary and Senior Nationals. Pasloski will attempt to peak in her performance at both those meets.
Craig Berube also had a stellar meet for the Glacier Bears and improved upon his preliminary times in the finals at the meet.
Berube was an iron man at the competition, qualifying for nine events and swimming for nine events. Craig swam in five finals after he locked down a spot in the top eight for preliminary competition.
Craig's best finishes came in the 100-m freestyle and 100-m backstroke, where he finished fifth overall. His other highlights included achieving a sixth place finish overall in the 50-m freestyle and 200-m freestyle. He also finished in the seventh spot in the 200-m IM.
Kirsten Berube's best finish came in the 800-m where she finished in 10th place, while Josh Kelly placed eighth in the 200-m breast stroke in what was a very tough 14-year-old category.
Kelly also achieved a 'AAA' time, swimming in the 100-m breast stroke, which earned him a 10th-place finish.
There was more than a few firsts for Isabel Parkkari, who attended her first 'AAA' championship and her first long course event. Highlights for Parkkarri included an 11th place finish in the 800-m free style swim.
Parkkari also swam very well in the 200-m breast stroke, finishing 10th and achieving a personal best time of 2:37.36 in the 200-m free style.
Molly Purser had an outstanding performance in the 100-m breast stroke, finishing in 12th place, while Jason Zrum finished 14th in the 1,500-m free style, swimming the event with a time of 19:00.48. Zrum also placed 13th in the 50-m free style, earning a personal best time of 29.04.
The next meet is Senior Nations, which both Pasloski and Alex Gabor will compete in as well as Age Group Nationals. The Whitehorse Glacier Bears swimmers that qualified for the Age Group Nationals meet include Gabor, Pasloski, Tanner Cassidy, Brice Harding and Spencer Sumanik.
In other swimming news Gabor won a bronze medal in the women's 4X200 freestyle relay at the world junior swimming championships in Monterrey, Mexico.
