Players on Whitehorse Flippers Pub have found a winning formula in the local broomball league. Simply put, they don't allow their opposition to score any goals.

On Monday, Flippers Pub extended its shutout streak to two games, beating first place Roadhouse 2-0 at the Whitehorse Broomball Rink.

For a second straight game, Alfie Dougherty recorded a shutout. His first came against Capital Towing on Sunday. Flippers Pub won Sunday's game 3-0.

"Second shutout of the playoffs, it's awesome," said Flippers player Milford Allain.

"He had one all season, so he's on a good roll."

Flippers didn't waste any time giving Dougherty a lead to work with, scoring a goal in the opening two minutes. Lindsay Charron showed off her hand-eye coordination, batting a cross ice shot out of the air to give her team a 1-0 lead.

The goal sent the Flippers bench into a frenzy that seemed to last the rest of the game.

Flippers kept the pressure on and it wasn't long before the team had its second scoring chance. This time, however,  Ryan Hannah got a leg on it, making a tough save on a one-timer shot.

"Good pressure guys," a Flippers player yelled not long after.

Dougherty was also tested and made a nice stop on a breakaway at just past the 10-minute mark of the opening period. Dougherty quickly closed the five-hole and then grabbed the rebound.

Flippers came within an eyelash of making it 2-0 in the second frame after one of its players stole the ball from Hannah, and then made a quick centering pass to a fellow teammate.

Fortunately for Roadhouse its lone defenceman was in position and made a goalie-like save to keep the ball out.

A few more chances and a penalty against Flippers didn't change the score, which after 40 minutes still remained at 1-0.

The way both goalies were playing, it seemed that the game was destined to end 1-0. However, with just a couple of minutes left on the clock, Adam Berkner capitalized after a scramble left Hannah down and out. After a series of shots, Berkner got his stick on the ball and lifted it into the open cage, securing a Flippers' victory.

Not only is Whitehorse Flippers Pub a rookie team in the Whitehorse Broomball League, but most of its members are also playing the game for the first time.

Allain, who is one of the veterans on the squad, said it felt good to beat Roadhouse for the first time all season.

"I think they are starting to feel that confidence that we need to be a dark horse," he said about his team of rookies. "Beating the Roadhouse is going to give them a lot of confidence."

He said Charron's goal was nice.

"That was a crazy goal, she did an awesome job, one timer into the back of the net," he said. "I think she is a natural, she has good high hand co-ordination and just can do it."

Flippers Pub will be back in action once again on Wednesday when the squad takes on offensive juggernaut Coyne.

Coyne was also victorious Monday, beating the Yukon News 3-1.

Wednesday's game against Coyne will decide if Flippers advances to Saturday's gold medal game.

Allain is hopeful the team will finish somewhere in the top three.

"The next game will decide our fate," he said. "I think they will be even more pumped for the next game. We'll see how the rookies do with the nerves."

Charron also said it felt good beating Roadhouse.

"We are a new team, so it feels good to be playing so strongly in the playoffs."

Charron, who is one of the rookies on Flippers Pub, said she didn't have any expectations in her first broomball season.

"It turned out to be really fun."

A win on Wednesday would equal Flippers win total for the regular season. Flippers finished with a regular season record of 3-14-3. The team's nine points placed them fifth overall in the six team league.

Charron said its regular season wins didn't necessarily give them any confidence heading into the playoffs, but added the team is playing better than at any point of the year.

"We improved a lot throughout the season," she said. "We learned a lot and it's pretty good for the playoffs."

She said the team's only goal is to play well in the playoffs.

"We have been playing well for the past two games and if we win (on Saturday) that would be a bonus, but just to play well the whole time and have a good time."

Coming into Monday's game, Roadhouse had lost only four games.

The team's record of 14-4-3 placed them at the top of the standings with 29 points.

However, thanks to march break, the group was short several players, forcing the squad to use only a two-man bench.

"It would be nice to have a few subs," said Trevor McKay, a forward on Roadhouse.

"It's tough when you don't have a lot of guys."

He said the team didn't put any pressure on itself to win on Monday because of its regular season record.

"It sucks when you lose, but it's just for fun," McKay said. "We just ran into a really good goalie today. I think we had just as many chances as they did, they just got lucky on a couple and Alfie stood tall today."
