Downhill mountain bike racers and dirt jumpers put their skill to the test this past weekend at the AFD Gravity Cup hosted at Mt. Sima.
Over 70 cyclists took part in the two-day event, which featured a dirt jumping competition on Saturday night and an eight-division downhill race on Sunday.
"The event as a whole was awesome,” said race organizer, Kristy Jacklin, who also raced in the event but was unable to finish after crashing her bike in one of the rocky sections of the downhill course.
Mt. Sima unveiled their new trail, Lefty Loosey, which featured a diverse terrain and received favourable reviews from the participants.
"It was challenging,” said Jacklin. "There were some steep sections, tough technical sections and even some sandy parts which made for a really good race.”
Only three seconds separated the top three riders in the men's Elite division.
Calgary's Cody Ratte was the fastest rider on the day, burning through the course with an incredible time of 3 minutes and 53 seconds.
Greg Taylor of Vernon, B.C., placed second with a time of 3:54 while North Vancouver's Jeff Bryson placed third, arriving at the finish line in 3:55.
With a large number of Whitehorse athletes participating, the event also drew racers from across Western Canada and Alaska.
Whitehorse's Kenzie Davy and Martina Knopp topped the Women's Sport and Women's Expert divisions with times of 6:15 and 5:33.
Local men's riders Sam Reimer and Justin Mullan also topped the Sr. Sport and Expert divisions, tearing up the course in 4:33 and 4:22.
On Saturday night Icycle Sport hosted a dirt jumping competition that drew six riders.
With the days warm temperatures persisting into the evening, the athletes took turn launching themselves over 15 feet into the air against the backdrop of the blue sky.
"The dirt jump was crazy,” said Jacklin.
"They pulled out some awesome tricks and it was really cool to see.”
The event was the second AFD Gravity Cup this summer.
The first took place in June in Hinton, Alta., and featured world renowned free rider, Geoff Gulevich.
The events are all encompassing, open to riders of all skill levels and ranging from toddlers competing on run bikes to world class freeriders ripping up the Elite division.
The Whitehorse event also featured a top talent, in local freerider Dylan Sherrard.
Sherrard is quickly rise to the top of the freeriding world was on hand to ride the trail and spend time with the participants.
The Lefty Loosey trail is part of Mt. Sima's new summer line-up, which also includes the Monkido Aerial Adventure Course and the 1.5-kilometre long ZOOM zipline.
The skil hill also opened their Panoramic Chairlift ride in mid-June, which cyclists used to get them to the top of the hill before bombing down Lefty Loosey and covering much of the mountain side in five minutes or less.
Jacklin, who spoke highly of her experience in Whitehorse, was one of several riders who had her day cut short due to injury.
"As an organizer, I didn't get a chance to practice too much,” she said.
"I was doing really well and I was hitting all my lines but I just came over a ridge faster than I had in practice and ended up spending the rest of the day in the hospital.”
After receiving some stitches to her mouth, Jacklin was back in touch with the event crew.
"I had heard Whitehorse was beautiful and larger than life and all that but it really is,” she said.
"The scenery is so beautiful and the mountains are so huge so now I'll just have to come back and race again.”
