The Whitehorse Curling Club was bustling this weekend as it hosted two events, the Arctic Winter Games trials and the Yukon Mens Championships.
The AWG trials was a showdown between four teams vying for the chance to represent the Yukon.
Team Sarah Koltun was successful in that endeavor over Team Sian Molloy.
Kolton's team, made up of third Chelsea Duncan, second Linea Eby and lead Jenna Duncan will represent the Yukon for their second time.
Koltun led her team to a silver medal at the 2008 Games in Yellowknife.
Molloy's team includes third Bailey Horte, second Kelsey Meger and lead Jenna Duncan.
The Yukon boys team will be Team Thomas Scoffin for the second time.
Scoffin, along with third Mitch Young, second Andrew Scoffin and lead Caleb Steele Lane beat Team Shawn Kitchen this weekend to earn the right to go to the Games.
Team Kitchen is made up of third Joe Wallingham, second Brayden Klassen, lead Bailey Muir-Cressman and fifth Liam Finnegan.
The teams played two games each to decide the winner of the trials.
"On behalf of the Whitehorse Curling Club we're very pleased with our club members who participated,” said Jon Solberg, manager of the club. "They'll represent the Yukon well.”
Solberg was unable to confirm the final scores for Teams Koltun and Scoffin.
As for the Yukon Mens Championships, four teams played for the chance to represent the Yukon at the Territorials to be held Feb. 6 to 9 at the Whitehorse Curling Club.
The winner from that tournament will represent the north at the Brier to be held in Halifax, N.S. from March 6 to 14.
Both Solberg and all members of Team Cowan have attended the Brier at least once.
Team Chad Cowan won this weekend's tournament, with Team Solberg in second after a tie-breaker. Both teams won a birth in the territorial playdowns.
Solberg is happy with his teams performance, considering the team is new.
"Our team has only played eight games together all year, including this weekend,” he said. "We didn't play to our maximum potential.”
Team Cowan third James Buyck said although they ended up winning, they could have improved their play.
"We played a few games that weren't very strong in our opinion,” he said.
Team Cowan headed into the final round with five wins and one loss – to Team Solberg.
Buyck said Solberg will be a major threat to his team at the playdowns.
"We're up against some tough competition in our local Team Solberg,” said Buyck.
Buyck said the Northwest Territories always sends tough teams to the playdowns. While he's unsure of all the teams attending, he is looking forward to the competition between Team Jamie Koe.
"They have a really tough team,” he said.
Also coming up for the curling club is the Canadian Tire Sportsman Bonspiel, from Feb. 12 to 14. The club will be hosting 32 teams from all over the Yukon.
"We send fliers out to the communities to try to engage them in the sport of curling,” said Solberg.
